Packing Lunches for Kids Working to Succeed

Join us for our fourth summer of making lunches for Kids Working to Succeed! Kids Working to Succeed (KWTS) is a program directed by All Peoples Church, Milwaukee. All Peoples Church is a community deeply committed to social justice that serves the Harambee Neighborhood.

From the program directors:

KWTS  runs off of a grant from Siebert Foundation and other donations.  The money is used to fund program expenses and provide the workers with their GIFTS.  Each student receives a money gift for each day worked ($15 per morning work day or per 2 afternoon work days).  Students follow the 80-10-10 rule:  Save 80%, tithe 10% and spend 10%.  A small portion of the funds is used to help support the salaries of the Lutheran Volunteer Corps staff members who run KWTS. The generosity of those who donate bag lunches for the students allows us to provide students with healthy lunches at the end of their morning work days.  We have between 30 and 35 workers each morning work day during the summer, and about 25 workers each work day during the school year.  Camp Umoja KWTS workers are fed through the Camp Umoja program.Extra lunches are never wasted…they are shared with neighborhood children who are hungry.  If we don’t have anyone scheduled to donate lunches on a particular date, then we find what we can in our food pantry and put together a lunch for the students.  We often supplement bag lunches or pantry lunches with fresh produce from the garden – encouraging students to taste and eat fresh, raw foods.

PURPOSE: Children will be able to assemble and pack lunches according to their ability in a casual environment with new and old friends. A fun project that will show our children that helping others is also something enjoyable and something they are capable of doing! KWTS kids will have a nutritious lunch after their responsibility-growing work in the gardens.

IMPACT: Toddlers and Kids on a Mission kids will grow in their awareness of their capabilities and of the capabilities of other kids to help out and make a positive impact.
