Human Equality Love Project (HELP) and Toddlers and Kids on a Mission are uniting once again for this collaborative summer project! HELP is based in Milwaukee and focuses on racial, social, and environmental justice with local and national projects. We have rented TWO garden plots at Atwater School in Shorewood this year. Families will have the opportunity to get dirty, tend and explore the garden, and harvest food to donate to our local partners at Riverwest Food Pantry and St. Vincent de Paul meal program. Green thumbs are not required. If you should have questions or need assistance during your week, we will provide that!

PURPOSE: Take responsibility for and nurture a community garden with your family for one week (Monday through Sunday) this summer at Atwater School.

IMPACT: In addition to the immediate benefits of gardening with family, the Riverwest Food Pantry will receive harvested crop donations from our garden and we will utilize our harvest foods to feed members of the St. Vincent de Paul Meal Program at All People's Church in the Harambee neighborhood.

ACTIVITIES

  1. June 3, 4:00-5:00pm Gardening Orientation and Planting Day at our Atwater Plots (rain date Saturday June 9, 9-10am), all participating families will have the opportunity to plant seeds and seedlings.
  2. All summer, each family will take ONE WEEK (Monday through Sunday) to weed and tend the garden. The week of September 18th, we will invite the families to come back to the garden to harvest the crops. During your family's assigned week, we ask you stop by the garden at least three times to tend the garden. Once our participating families have registered, we will communicate the "planting and harvest days" via email. We are also working on a "farm field trip" to either Barthels in Mequon or Growing Power in Milwaukee.
  3. Related activities with more info pending: CSA Leftovers Collection ongoing, Barthels Strawberry Trip for St. Vincent De Paul.
