TOAM and Thurston Woods Elementary School’s Reading Buddies project began in 2015. For the 2016-2017 school year, our little ones are being mentored by fifth grade student council members. Our project has been featured by North Shore NOW, Milwaukee Public Schools, and Fox6 News.
PURPOSE The Reading Buddies project is meant to grow the students’ confidence in reading and in their ability to lead, the program will allow your child to partner with an older child who is supportive and a great example of an “expert” reader (as they say in elementary school). Artwork will be created to decorate the cafeteria at a senior center. It’s also fun, creative, and playful.
**For the February event, we will be cooking together rather than making an art project.**
IMPACT Your work at Reading Buddies will create a cheerful artwork to brighten an elderly Milwaukee resident’s day. As a token of gratitude, TOAM offers a book to each Thurston Woods reading buddy. By partnering with a school community and donating artwork, you and your child will help grow relationships across multiple neighborhoods.
CANCELLATIONS: We cap the event at 15 families so we can have a 1:1 ratio for the 15 students who volunteer their time with us. We understand that illness and emergencies can happen but if you cannot make it, please let us know as soon as possible so we can find a replacement. Email firstname.lastname@example.org in case of a cancellation.
